Trying to better understand the structure and function of these carbs so I can someday be less of a carb dummy. I found some good diagrams and videos but have yet to see the float bowl connecting tubes explained. Are they just there to equalize fuel levels or do they serve some other purpose?

Bowl rubber tubing, like these? Not sure i understand the question? The upper short rubber tube shown is to equalize bowl to bowl chamber pressure because two barbs are provided per complete set so they are tied together. Lower tube is for accel pumped fuel per each nozzle in venturi.

I answered my own question. Yup it was the accelerator pump tubing. When I asked the question I didn't have the carbs in front of me. Once I did, the answer was obvious.

Re: rebuilding vm24 with acc pump for dummies
24 Oct 2026 20:03 - 24 Oct 2026 20:04Welp I gave it my best shot and am pretty much back to where I started. I took em off again, spent much time setting and resetting fuel service levels, and in the meantime my new jets and pods came so I put those on. I am super happy with those, I can now get the carbs on and off in about 3 minutes but it runs pretty much the same as it did with the airbox. Starts right up but its still spitting on #4, and possibly #2, and is hard to get above 30mph, spitting increases with attempted acceleration and it just bogs down. Hard to set the air screws with any precision because the idle is finicky and needs choke to stay running . I've pulled the carb holders and inspected them closely, replaced vacuum caps, and checked them all with carb cleaner spray multiple times and can't find any leaks. The other thing that come up in searches on this is valves, but I checked the clearances when I got this project bike last year. Not really feeling like doing that again at the moment. Maybe timing advancer? IDK. Since nice weather is pretty much gone I might just pull the carbs, clean off any gas and store for the winter. Actually it might be for another year, because I might be gone that long again. Rats.I finally got the job "done" and installed the carbs aaaaannnnd (drumroll)...it started right up and it runs. Like doggie doodoo. It is spitting and coughing. I believe its the #2 spitting. But I also forgot or hadn't paid close enough attention until I got them installed that the #2 airscrew port seems to have a helicoil or something in it, so maybe that's part of the problem. Another problem is that the brass tube connecting bowl 2 and 3 popped out. I got it back in but it is still leaking a tiny bit so the carbs will have to come off again. I have another #2 I can substitute if need be. I was trying to take advantage of our last 2 warm days this weekend so I didn't check the fuel levels or vacuum synch it, but now I will have time to do those things because...
